Microsoft, Citrix, and VMware may not have had any clue when “RDP” was introduced to the desktop that one day people would want to put desktops on Hypervisors. But as water will find the path of least resistance, people found the path of least complexity; thus, the Virtual Desktop was born.
It soon became evident that there were limitations that did not allow for scaling, and the first TCO numbers were dubious at best. So we saw limited use with the cost and scaling issues outweighing the productivity benefits.
But, like any technology that shows potential profit benefit, companies invested time and money to solve the key limitations preventing solution adoption. Now, with storage, processor, memory, network, protocol, and software innovations, the perfect storm exists for the realization of the dream.
So here we are in 2009 with an array of technologies to deal with the shortcomings of a virtual desktop solution. Session load balancing, secure access, centralized management, solid state disks, centralized patch management, and peripheral support are just some of the utilities that not only lower the cost, but make the Virtual Desktop exceedingly possible.
Companies that may have reviewed VDI solutions in the past and said “hold,” should seriously consider looking at VDI again. We believe that now is the time to take advantage of these utilities to make Virtual Desktops work for a greater number of companies.

Join Francis Czekalski, GreenPages’ Solution Architect, as he cuts through all of the hype and examines VDI from both technical and total cost of ownership (TCO) perspectives to help you determine if VDI is a good fit for your organization.
Topics include various VDI use cases along with pros and cons of each, how to accurately calculate Return on Investment (ROI) and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for a VDI environment, and best practices for architecting a VDI environment to maximize the cost benefits.
