What’s New in VMware vSphere 4.0: Key Features Overview

By Chris Ward, Director Solutions Architecture

As most of you know, VMware has renamed its VMware Infrastructure product vSphere 4.0—basically it is the next major version of VMware Infrastructure 3. And although many of the features and functionality in vSphere remain the same as in VI3—High Availability, VMotion, and Distributed Resource Scheduling for example—there are a lot of pretty impressive new upgrades and additions that warrant a closer look.

Fault Tolerance

VMware Fault Tolerance offers single identical VMs running in lockstep on separate hosts. This means zero downtime and zero data loss failover for all virtual machines in case of hardware failure. There is no complex clustering or specialized hardware required. Plus, VMware Fault Tolerance offers a single common mechanism for all applications and Operating Systems. This greatly minimizes the administrative knowledge and overhead required to provide cluster level fault tolerance.
