Microsoft’s recent release of Server 2008 has many enhancements that make it an attractive choice for IT administrators and a worthwhile upgrade for businesses of all sizes.
Modularity Means Choice
First, Server 2008 is much more modular than its previous version. When you install the OS you have more choice and a lot more options about what parts you want to install. Server 2008’s modularity also offers better performance since you’re not running unnecessary services which take up cpu and memory.
Tighter Security
With Server 2003, you had this monolithic entity with services that left you with a large attack surface. The more services you have running and the more ports you have open, the more vulnerable you are to attack. Conversely, the fewer services you have and the slimmer the OS, the tighter the security.
Network Access Protection
Another security feature is the network access protection (NAP) which will do endpoint scanning for vpn connections into your network; it will verify that the client PC is a trusted PC, verify that your AV signature files are up to date, and ensure that the latest Microsoft patches and updates are installed. This ensures that your security policy is 100% met before machines or clients are allowed access to the network.
