VMware: A Simple Answer to Overcome the Complex Challenge of Remote Access

Corporations are always looking for ways to allow people to access their network remotely. Whether it’s to enable employees to work from home, to give account managers access to accurate sales and inventory data when they are on the road, or to ensure that the organization can continue to function in anything from a snow storm to a manmade disaster, remote access can be a huge boost to workforce productivity.

Important questions to ask yourself

Allowing remote access raises many important security questions for the IT department. For example, does it mean that now you have to support the home computer too? Are there children or other members of the household who are also using that computer, and what are they doing? How can you be sure that nobody can use that remote connection to access your corporate data? Could employees store data on their home system, and take it with them to their next employer when they leave? Are they using public computers and, if so, could there be a key logger capturing usernames and passwords? Should you force password changes every 30 days? Or track failed login attempts? Do you know what is being stored and printed locally? The list goes on. Faced with these questions, corporations typically choose to limit access to approved devices or machines, and that usually means providing laptops to all their users. But is this really the best way to go?

Enforcement presents an ongoing challenge

Certainly the best way to provide remote access to your network is through a controlled environment. But it’s expensive to equip every employee with a laptop. Not only would you have to maintain a large inventory of machines that are constantly moving all around, you’d also have to make sure that all those machines are up to date on patches, virus definitions and the latest corporate applications just as with your internal systems. And what if they were ever lost? You’d want to make sure that all those hard drives were encrypted. (You DO use encryption, right?) Oh, and while you’re at it, don’t forget about iPods, PDAs and all those other devices that store data. Are you going to allow them to be used and enable them to add data, too?
