Planning for 802.11n—The Next Generation Wireless
that Will Change Your Network

Whether you're a wired enterprise thinking of going wireless, or already a mixed wired/wireless organization using current 802.11a/b/g standards, the subject of 802.11n technology has no doubt crossed your radar screen. With the promise of greater available bandwidth, broader frequency, reliable connectivity, and the freedom of wireless mobility, 802.11n technology is potentially a great advancement in wireless options.

Although 802.11n may be the next generation wireless, it is not a ratified standard. Devices shipping today with 802.11n are “draft” versions of the technology. Jump too quickly and you may have hardware that is not fully ratified. Why is this important? If the specification changes you may be stuck with equipment that could be limited in functionality or not compatible with other solutions, thus drastically limiting your portability to other systems. The challenge for IT administrators then is how to continue to expand their networks while planning for the future addition of
“n–enabled” equipment.
