The Simple Solution: VMware ACE You know, maybe it doesn’t have to be this complicated. In fact, if we agree that it’s reasonable to expect employees in businesses that require travel or telecommuting to provide their own laptop, the answer is remarkably simple: VMware ACE. VMware ACE is a remote access solution that provides a fully encrypted image that can be booted from a portable device such as a USB flash drive, and thus eliminates any use of the local hard drive on the machine it’s running on. Think of it as a "laptop on a stick." ACE leverages the same virtualization technology that VMware is already known for, and includes several firewall and security features that prevent the local OS from interacting with the ACE environment. Standard corporate VPN tools and authentication mechanisms are used to authenticate and secure the connection from the ACE environment no matter where the user is. But most important, if the host OS is ever compromised, the ACE environment stills remains isolated. Retain complete control of your data ACE is a completely managed environment that’s configured by the corporation to provide the specific applications, settings, and patches that individual users need to perform their jobs. The settings for all ACE images are controlled by a central management server. Although users have some flexibility to customize their own environment, the management server supports secure policy updates and can be used to activate or deactivate images at any time. In cases when users have been terminated, for example, their images can be programmed to automatically self-destruct when connection is attempted. The bottom line on VMware ACE So, now for the biggest question of all, how much does such a flexible, secure and manageable remote access solution cost? Much less than you might think. With 2GB portable USB drives running at less than $99.00 and the average list price of ACE 2.0 Enterprise being $99.00 per seat, implementing VMware ACE works out to be less than $200 per person. And when you compare that to the cost of a laptop, never mind the manpower expense for monitoring and enforcing security protocols, well, you do the math. But suffice it to say, VMware ACE customers experience full ROI within just three months and a reduced TCO for many years to come. Any questions?
