How .NET Works
.NET Framework is used by most new applications created for Windows. Programs written for the .NET Framework execute in an environment that manages the program’s runtime requirements. This runtime environment is known as the Common Language Runtime (CLR). Because the CLR provides the appearance of an application virtual machine, the CPU’s capabilities don’t need to be considered.
