Green IT Solutions

Green Finally Hits IT.
The environmental movement has been around for decades, but only now has it reached IT. And not just reached; green IT is accelerating through corporate datacenters like a freight train. No longer a “nice to have,” green technologies are here, they’re powerful, and they’re fundamentally changing IT—for the better.

Through Green Colored Glasses.
Although Green IT has been a secondary priority and a blind spot for most U.S. companies, a number of drivers have now converged to make the implementation of green technologies a viable, smart approach.

Green IT Standards. 2008 & Beyond.
Everyone knows about tight corporate budgets and record high energy prices. But what’s also on the horizon are federal regulations and standards governing datacenter efficiencies that will dramatically affect corporate technology initiatives

A (Greenish) Silver Lining
In the midst of a negative economy, the good news is that the affordability of more efficient technologies and the high ROI of approaches such as virtualization are quickly making Green IT a realistic goal for businesses of all sizes.

Virtualization Enables Green IT
Specifically datacenter virtualization, VDI, storage virtualization, and application virtualization, are enabling businesses to operate more effectively—and affordably—than ever before using eco-friendly technology approaches.

Green IT Growth
Though only one in five U.S. companies are using eco-friendly computing practices, (Datamonitor Survey, “2008 Trends to Watch: Green IT”) it is predicted that Green IT will grow (in addition to a belief in corporate social responsibility) as companies use it as a business strategy.

Measurement Issues & the EPA
Though most people agree that Green IT makes both business and environmental sense, defining meaningful metrics and models for technology is challenging. Toward that effort, the EPA expects to introduce its first Energy Star rating for servers by the end of 2008. The difficulty has been in determining what is “useful” server work and measuring that against power consumption standards. A more comprehensive system measuring actual workloads is in the works.
