21st Century Classroom
How 21st Century Kids Learn.
The world is changing, and teaching methodologies need to keep pace as well. The behaviorist drill and practice strategies used in the ‘60s and ‘70s are not the most effective tools for today’s digital natives. Research shows that learning is accelerated when students construct meaning through interactivity—among other students, through curriculum, and with their teachers. Consequently, the classroom paradigm is shifting from teacher centered to student centered.
21st Century Classrooms Bridging Traditional Analog Classrooms.
“Tell me, I forget, show, me I remember, involve me, I understand.”
The old Chinese proverb can be appropriately applied to 21st Century Learning. Digital Natives have grown up accustomed to actively engaging and creating digital information, yet classrooms today lack the supporting infrastructure to foster a collaborative, 21st Century classroom environment.
By using Promethean’s Activclassroom tools such as the Activboard, Activslate, or Activote (formative assessment device), 21st Century students take an active role in constructing knowledge, and interacting directly with the learning material, their teacher, and other students.
21st Century Classroom Technology Integration Promotes the Development of Higher Order Thinking and Problem Solving Skills.
Higher order thinking includes focusing, information gathering, remembering, organizing, analyzing, generating, integrating, and evaluating. Each of these aptitudes can be supported, developed, and reinforced using technology such as the Activclassroom tools.
21st Century Teaching Technology Transforms Teacher–Student Interaction.
The Activclassroom tools allow teachers to become less of a “Sage–on–the–Stage” and more of a “Guide–on–the–Side,” while providing students a greater ability to direct their own learning. Formative assessment tools such as Activotes provide every student a simultaneous voice, while individual student responses are captured “behind the scenes” to provide teachers concrete data to direct differentiated instruction.
21st Century Learning Technology Enhances Classroom Instruction.
Digital Natives learn best in their own language. With Promethean’s Activclassroom, instead of four students at the back of the room working on computers, the entire class can take a virtual field trip via the Internet…using free resources such as Google Earth to traverse the Great Wall of China or soar through the Grand Canyon. By using these interactive visual and kinesthetic resources, students can deepen both their geographic sense and their understanding of history and landscape
