Virtualization & Server Based Computing

Virtualization. A Different Way of Looking at IT.

Virtualization technology such as server virtualization, storage virtualization, desktop virtualization, hardware virtualization, as well as server based computing (SBC) offer the potential for a fundamental change in the way IT managers think about computing resources. When managing individual boxes becomes less of a challenge, the focus of IT can shift from the technology to the services the technology can provide.

Why Virtualization Matters

Virtualization allows IT administrators to control a guest operating system’s use of CPU, memory, storage, and other resources, so each guest receives only the resources that it needs. Since the guest is not bound to the hardware, it also becomes possible to dynamically move an operating system from one physical machine to another. As a particular guest OS begins to consume more resources during a peak period, the offending guest can be moved to another server with less demand.

What Is Virtualization?

Simply put, virtualization allows multiple operating system instances to run concurrently on a single computer. Virtualization is a means of separating hardware from an operating system. In virtualization, each “guest” OS is managed by a Virtual Machine Monitor (VMM), also known as a hypervisor. By providing a logical view of computing resources, rather than a physical view, virtualization makes it possible to do a couple of very useful things: It can allow you, essentially, to trick your operating systems into thinking that a group of servers is a single pool of computing resources. And it can allow you to run multiple operating systems simultaneously on a single machine.

Virtualization. Do More with Less.

Instead of purchasing and maintaining an entire computer for one application, virtualization enables each application to be given its own operating system, with all the operating systems residing on a single piece of hardware. This provides the benefits of decentralization, such as security and stability, while making the most of a machine’s resources. Virtualization is also driving the adoption of 64-bit computing. For IT administrators who want to do more with less—meaning with fewer servers—virtualization and 64-bit technology are a terrific combination.

Virtualization Keeps Business Agile and Available

Beyond the potentially dramatic cost savings, virtualization is also an important component of any comprehensive BCDR initiative and can greatly enhance an organization's business agility. Companies that employ clustering, partitioning, workload management and other virtualization techniques to configure groups of servers into reusable pools of resources are better positioned to respond to the changing demands.
